As a newspaper photojournalist in Illinois since 1992, I've covered a vast array of assignments, from "Pet of the Week" to the U.S. Open golf tournament. My career started with hand-rolled black-and-white film processed and printed in nasty chemical darkrooms, and even the occasional bathroom. Now, we're all grappling with expensive digital cameras, complicated computer software, expanding video technology, and the ups and downs of the Internet. Through all those changes, both good and bad, the goal has remained the same – to convey a moment of humanity that words alone could never do justice.
